Young Composers!

Congratulations to all the young composers who submitted their pieces to this year’s YRMTA Young Composers Competition! 

Here are the results:

11 and Under

First place – Escaping Mouse by Ian Turcotte

Second place – Plane Ride by Arlo Biederman

Third place – Spirit’s Spell by Bennett Vermeulen

15 and Under

First place – Ragtime Hoedown by Nat Stark

Second place – Caribou by Rose Preto

Third place – Sunlit Escapade by Nigel Wise.

Also, special congratulations to Ruben Slobogean for winning first place in his age category  with his piece Tricks of the Mind in the 2023 NATIONAL CFMTA Student Composer Competition!  Due to some communication mix-ups we didn’t get the news about this until earlier this year – Way to go Ruben!

Thank you to all the teachers encouraging their students to create their own music.

How fabulous we can celebrate the creativity of YRMTA students!

YRMTA Yukon Student Composer Competition 2024

The YRMTA Yukon Student Composer Competition 2024 is now accepting entries.

This competition invites original compositions for any instrument, voice or combinations of voices and instruments in the following categories:

8 years and under

11 years and under

15 years and under

19 years and under

To enter:

1. Send an electronic copy of the written music to Andrea McColeman.  Please accompany this with an e-mail telling us the young composer’s name, age and the name of your teacher/mentor as well as parent’s phone number and e-mail. (Please do not include the student composer’s name on the written music).

2. If possible please also send a recording of the piece – a phone voice memo quality or midi recording is fine. 

3. You may also include a short paragraph talking about your piece or a picture that tells the story of the music.

Deadline to enter is Friday April 5.

Winners will be notified at the end of April. 

There will be prizes!!

Music Teachers & Friends in Concert

Please join us to promote music and music education.

On Sunday February 11, at 3pm, YRMTA music teachers and friends will hit the stage at the Whitehorse United Church for their annual recital. This is a fundraiser presented by the Yukon Registered Music Teachers’ Association - a great opportunity to hear some of our many talented music teachers perform. This year we celebrate and showcase a variety of hard working music educators within the YRMTA and throughout the community.

Featured performers include Ben Johnston-Urey, Amy Klassen, Ellen Thompson, Maxime Crawford-Holland, Connie Penner, Jerry Woolridge, Hannah Mazurek and Graeme Peters.

Admission is by donation. All proceeds go to support Yukon music student programming and professional development for music teachers.

Come on out for a fun afternoon of music!

Check out the lovely concert happening Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022 celebrating Canada Music Week!  

The show features performances by jazz pianist Andy Slade, The Fiddleheads, Vocalist Emily Ross and student performers:  Dorothy Dallaire (piano), Hera Mae Hermosa (voice),  Kenan Johnson (piano), Lucy Aasman (guitar), Ben Williams(piano), Kippen Briggs (piano), Xavier Davis (cello), Autumn Von Eccher (piano), Chloe Kennedy(piano), Daniel McLelland( guitar), Nicolas Fecteau (piano).  

The concert is family friendly and a great way to explore Canadian compositions and support young Yukon musicians.  

(Canada Music Week was started in 1960 by the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Association. Its goal is to highlight the importance of Canadian music to audiences, educators and students across Canada.)

Calling all young composers!

The YRMTA Student Composer Competition 2022 is now accepting entries. 

The YRMTA Student Composer’s Competition is open to students 19 years of age and under, currently studying music with a teacher who is a member of the YRMTA. 

Winners will be announced towards the end of May and winners in each category will be eligible to enter the Canada-wide  Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association (CFMTA) Student Composer Competition. 

Information for teachers:

• To enter, submit an electronic copy of the music to Andrea McColeman at amccoleman88@gmail.com by May 9th. Please do not put the student’s name on the music. 
• If possible please also send a recording of the piece – a phone voice memo quality or midi recording is fine. 
• You may also include a short paragraph talking about your piece or a picture that tells the story of the music.
